A 22-year-old student has been sentenced to three months in jail for assaulting a taxi driver and damaging his car.

The Emirati student is believed to have approached the driver and inadvertently attacked him.

He has been charged with assault that led to injury and damaging of public property. The Court of First Instance also ordered him to pay Dh500 in damages.

The incident allegedly happened on February 7, last year.

The taxi driver, a 40-year-old Pakistani, said he was on duty outside the Dragon Mart when the accused got close to his car and grabbed the door handle trying to open the door.

“I was standing outside my car and it was locked. So I told him to wait until I opened it for him. But he grabbed the door handle with force and I told him he would break it,” the complainant told the prosecutor.

The defendant then kicked the car and hit the driver with his fist before he picked up a stick from the ground and assaulted the driver, the driver claimed in his statement. As the driver tried to find out the reason behind the attack, the defendant assaulted him again with his fist. “I fell down and he kicked me on the back and left shoulder”.

The student tried to run away but the driver held him until the police arrived. “The other drivers had already called the police. But the student continued assaulting me by hitting me.”

According to the forensic report, the driver sustained a shoulder injury due to the attack. The damage the student caused to the driver’s car was estimated at Dh500.

The student admitted in the investigation to the charges. The verdict can still be appealed within 15 days.
