Climbing down into an active volcano just a few meters away from the hot exploding lava may be unthinkable for most of us but not for Sam Cossman. Video footage of his dramatic descent into the active Marum crater has now gone viral and is scary enough to keep your heart pounding.

Self-described as an ‘Indiana Jones of the digital era’, Cossman travelled to the volcanic multi-island nation of Vanuatu in the South Pacific to make two expeditions and six descents to give people a glimpse of the violently boiling lava lake. Locally known as ‘The Entrance To Hell’, this lava lake can reach up to temperatures as high as 2,000 degrees.

Cossman, who was also helped by a team of volcanologists, went down 1,200 feet using a heat-resistant rope and a protective suit to be as close to the dangerous site as humanly possible. The dramatic footage was captured using drones and GoPro cameras.
