It is learnt that at around 5.30 pm, group of eight boys went to the river to swim. While in the water, Suhail got stuck in a hole in the river bed and immediately his brother Sahil rushed to his rescue. However, both were drawn by the water currents and drowned, it is learnt.

The deceased boys were the students Holy Family School, Meramajal. Suhail was sixth standard student while Sahil was 9th standard student.

The bodies were initially taken to Thumbay hospital and later shifted to Wenlock hospital for autopsy.

Sources said that the boys’ father Isaak is employed in Dubai. Suhail and Sahil were the eldest two among Isaak’s three sons and a daughter. Isaaq has already left for Mangaluru, sources said.

Illegal sand mining in the area had deepened the river, which had caused this incident, said the locals.
