Opposing repair works of stretch connecting to SEZ, Jokatte residents stage protest, 18 persons arrested

Mangaluru, September 3: Locals led by DYFI president Muneer Katipalla protested against carrying out repair works of stretch leading to SEZ on Thursday September 3rd.

It is gathered that Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim had passed orders to carry out the repair work on the stretch connecting SEZ. DC had also written to the police commissioner and sought police protection to the workers in view of recent protests by Jokatte residents against the ongoing works at SEZ. According to the orders passed by DC, the road repair work was about to begin at Jokatte under tight police security.

Meanwhile, locals led by Muneer Katipalla arrived at the spot and protested by lying down on the road.

There was a heated exchange of words between the officials and locals. When the locals were on their stand that they would not let to undertake the road repair works at any cost, conflict aroused.

Then the police arrested and took 18 protesters, including women, to the police station.
