Flash protest in Moodbidre after murder of flower vendor, activists damage shops, police resort to lathi charge

Mangaluru, October 10: Few hours after the murder of a flower vendor as well as a pro-hindu activist in Moodabidre on October 9th morning, unproclaimed bundh was observed and tense situation had prevailed in the town after stones were pelted at few shops and police resorted to lathi charge to bring the situation under control.

Some shops downed their shutters while some shops were forcibly shut and the protesters cried slogans. Hundreds of activists of Hindu organizations participated in the protest.

The buses and auto rickshaws remained off the roads and the passengers were seen stranded at the bus stops.

Prashant Poojary (29), son of Anand Poojary and a resident of Hosabettu was murdered on the early morning on Friday October 9th by a gang of six masked men who came in a bike. Prashant was rushed to a private hospital in Moodbidri and then to a hospital in Mangaluru, but he breathed his last on the way.

Eye witnesses said, among the three bikes used by the assailants, two did not have number plates, while the third bike was new and not yet registered, said eyewitnesses.

Same day by evening, Prashant’s body was kept for public view in Moodbidri and people were allowed to pay their last respects.

Soon after the body was taken to Prashant’s residence, a group of youths pelted stones and tried to cause damage to some of the shops.

The police had to resort to lathi charge to disperse the mob and bring the situation under control.

A group also tried to forcibly shut down the petrol bunk located opposite the spot where the murder took place and the group also snatched away and damaged the camera of a videographer of a TV channel who was recording the incident. . In another correlated incident, a group barged into an office of a real estate company located near the crime spot and vandalized the premises for not closing down. A person pelted stones at a hotel and damaged its glass panes.
