Bangalore: Shakuntala Bangarappa, wife of former chief minister, the late S Bangarappa, passed away at a private hospital in the City on Tuesday after battling cancer for more than six months.

Cdr Indru Wadhwani, CEO of Mallya Hospital, where 73-year-old Shakuntala breathed her last, said she had been suffering from lymphoma for a long time and was receiving regular treatment. On Tuesday, she was rushed to the hospital at 2 pm. “The end came at 3.10 pm after her condition worsened,” he said.

Shakuntala is survived by two sons, former minister Kumar Bangarappa and Sorab MLA Madhu Bangarappa; three daughters – Sujatha Tilak Kumar, Geetha Shivrajkumar and Anitha Pawan, and 10 grandchildren.

Her body was taken to her residence in Sadashivanagar in the evening. The last rites will be performed at the family’s Bangaradama Estate near Sorab in Shimoga district at 1 pm on Wednesday, according to family sources.

Former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, Ministers K J George, M H Ambarish, Vinay Kumar Sorake, Kimmane Ratnakar, former ministers K S Eshwarappa, Bandeppa Kashempur, S R More and K B Koliwad, film producer Parvathamma Rajkumar and other prominent people from various walks of life visited the Sadashivanagar residence and paid their last respects.

Shakuntala’s son-in-law and popular actor Shivrajkumar, who addressed the media outside Mallya Hospital, said she was suffering from cancer and was on chemotherapy. “I was shooting for a film when I heard that she was in a critical condition. By the time I reached here, she had passed away.”

Shakuntala had briefly campaigned for her daughter Geetha Shivrajkumar, who is the JD(S) candidate for the Lok Sabha elections from the Shimoga constituency.

Former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa, BJP State president Pralhad Joshi and Higher Education Minister R V Deshpande have condoled her death.
