Bangalore: The State government will construct 11,500 new police quarters at a cost of Rs 1,800 crore in Karnataka of which 2,500 units will be in Bangalore alone, said Home Minister K J George.
Speaking to reporters after inspecting police quarters at various locations in the City on Wednesday, George said that the government was able to meet only 40 per cent of the demand for housing by the police department.
“Our project aims to meet 60 per cent of the requirement. The work has been entrusted to the Karnataka Police Housing Corporation,” the minister said.
George said that locations for construction of houses were being identified across the State and tenders had been floated for the project at several places.
He added that local residents will be entrusted with monitoring the construction work.
The minister inspected police quarters and vacant land of the police department at three locations in Shivajinagar. He was accompanied by Minister for Infrastructure Development and Haj R Roshan Baig, Bangalore Police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar and the Karnataka Police Housing Corporation (KPHC) managing director Praveen Sood.
During the inspection, the residents poured out their woes to the ministers.
At the Shivajinagar quarters, women complained that they were being supplied with contaminated water by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board.
Vasantha, a resident, said that flooring in several houses had been damaged and the walls were also wearing away.
At Ulsoor, the ministers noticed that a prime land belonging to the police had been turned into a dumping yard. George directed the police officers to take possession of the property and utilise it for the construction of a building.
