Devaraj Urs’ contribution to society recalled

Several programmes were held here on Wednesday to mark the 99th birth anniversary of the late Chief Minister D. Devaraj Urs.

C. Naganna, director of Prasaranga, University of Mysore, credited Urs with providing social justice to numerically smaller castes and communities in a democratic set-up.

Participating in a programme organised by the district administration, Mysore Zilla Panchayat and the University of Mysore, Dr. Naganna said it would have been difficult for these castes and communities to secure their due democratically in the current political system.

‘Pioneering role’
But, Urs played a pioneering role in providing political power to the backward classes, he said.

M.K. Somashekar, Chikkamadu and Vasu, Congress MLAs, participated in the programme and remembered Urs’ contribution to the development of backward classes in the State.

Urs’ birth anniversary was also observed at the city Congress office here. President of the city unit C. Dasegowda recalled the late Chief Minister’s contribution to society.

R. Dhruvanarayan, Chamarajanagar MP, while participating in a programme organised by the Ursu Pratibha Balaga, said that Urs should be credited with introducing the Land Reforms Act in the State.
