MANGALORE: Torrential rains which lashed the city since Monday evening caused retaining walls to collapse which left three houses damaged on Tuesday.
In both the cases, inmates of the houses escaped with minor injuries.
In the first incident which occurred on Monday night, the house of Maria Cutinha at Bajjodi was damaged when a retaining wall, built to protect the house on an upper plane, behind her house came crashing.
Mangalore Rural police and the corporator Keshav visited the spot and assessed the damage. The damage is in excess of Rs 1 lakh as one of the bed rooms, dining hall and kitchen were damaged. With rains still continuing the house of Leena Pinto which is in the upper side is in a dangerous position.
On Tuesday morning, the houses of Narayana Salian and Appu Poojari was damaged when a retaining wall adjacent to their house collapsed near their houses causing damage to the tiled house and an under construction house. Appu Poojari said: “I feel afraid to live here. But I don’t have any other alternative.”

As per the district office, Dakshina Kannada received 755 mm of rainfall on Tuesday as against just 0.5 mm for the same day last year, with Mangalore taluk receiving 102mm. The cumulative rainfall for the June month was 130 mm on Tuesday last year and on Tuesday this year it was more than twice at 326mm.
