New theory calling Diana’s death a murder

DIANALondon:  News of yet another conspiracy theory on the death of Diana Princess of Wales in 1997 — this time from the former parents-in-law of a former soldier who said that the military was behind her death — has hit the headlines in Britain, where any news on the former Princess of Wales is news to be milked.

All newspapers have splashed the news of the murder allegation, reportedly passed on by the Royal Military Police to Scotland Yard’s Specialist Crime and Investigation Command which is, to quote media reports, “assessing its relevance and credibility”.

The Sunday Telegraph reported in a front page item that the claim surfaced during the trial of a former SAS sniper convicted of illegal weapons possession. By afternoon, news channels had relegated the news far below the top stories.

The allegation of murder was investigated in Operation Paget, led by the then Met police commissioner Lord Stevens, which in 2006 gave its report that rejected the murder claims and attributed her death in a car crash with her boyfriend Dodi al-Fayed to the carelessness of their chauffeur Paul, who was drunk and was driving too fast.

The circumstances of the princess death was further investigated and examined during a 90-day inquest let by Lord Justice Scott Baker in 2008.
