Ahmedabad, May 22: Two budding Engineers have developed a security system which prevents a car from being stolen.

Viraj Shah and Ashish Vara, students of the final semester of Electronics and Communication Engineering at LDRP Institute of Technology and Research, Gandhinagar, have innovated a security system that allows an owner to control the movement of his car and prevent its theft by using his mobile phone. The institute is a constituent of Kadi Sarva Vishwavidyalaya.

The system is a GPS and GSM-enabled device that can be fitted in the car. If anyone other than the owner starts the car, an SMS is sent the owner’s mobile alerting him. The system also gives him an option to lock and stop the car by simply sending an SMS.

Viraj says, “The tracking device is attached to the automobile. As soon as one starts the car, an SMS is generated through a microcontroller and the same is sent to the owner on his mobile. If the owner feels any unauthorized person is trying to use the car, he can revert by sending ‘ignition stop’ SMS and the car will slow down and stop and the door will also get locked automatically. Later, the owner can ascertain his vehicle’s location by sending another message.”

Their project has found mention in international journals. The two students have also applied for a patent.

According to Viraj, the system will be helpful in keeping track of the movements of a car. If the car is being driven by the son, the parent can simply send a ‘compete data’ SMS and the microcontroller will send the speed of the car after every 10 minutes.

“This will help the parent know the speed at which the car is being driven. We are working to convert the box-type structure into a chip-based system which can be fitted anywhere near the steering,” he says.
