Barrackpore: A 34-year-old man choked to death after a koi fish that he had clenched under his teeth got stuck in his throat at Kakinara near Jagaddal in North 24-Parganas on Saturday morning. Doctors tried their best to get the fish out, but could not save the victim, Chandan Mallick.
Mallick, a resident of Kakinara and a jute mill worker, was very fond of fishing. At 7.30am on Saturday, he went to Nayanjuli, adjacent to Kalyani Expressway, to catch fish.
“He almost went down in the waist-deep water and was busy catching fishes in the pond which were full of koi. While others were keeping the fish in their baskets, Mullick clenched a koi fish under his teeth and was trying to catch another one. Within seconds he started writhing in pain after the fish got stuck in his throat,” said Somenath Das, a local.
Locals tried their best to get the fish out of Mallick’s throat. When their efforts failed, he was taken to Naihati State General Hospital.
In the hospital, doctors tried to bring the fish out of his throat, but he died out of breathing problem.
“He was very fond of catching fish and used to go anywhere for it. On Saturday, he did not go to the Kakinara jute mill for work since he heard from his neighbours about the fishes in Nayanjuli,” said Mallick’s wife Gouri.
