‘Poompuhar’ exhibition inaugurated by Mayor Mahabala Maarla in the city

Mangalore, October 24: The Mayor Mahabala Maarla inaugurated the crafts mela of Tamilnadu Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited, popularly known as ‘Poompuhar’, on Friday October 24th, at Hotel Woodlands in Mangalore.

Mayor Mahabala Maarla in his conversation with the media said “Statue of Lord Vishnu here is beautiful. These statues depict the culture of our country India. People of Mangalore should make time to visit the exhibition. Surely, these products will be useful to every home.”

Manager of Poompuhar Manikantan said, “The exhibition is organized to provide additional marketing assistance to the artisans. 20 stalls from Odisha, Maharashtra, Punjab, Delhi etc. are here. This is the 4th we are coming to Mangalore. Every year we get good response from the businessmen. Last year we achieved Rs. 50 lakhs sales and this year we are expecting even more”.

The statue of Lord Vishnu relaxing on a serpent made out of an alloy of five metals (Pancha Loha) drew the attention of all. The price of the statue is Rs 50 lakhs. There was a huge branch lamp stand costing Rs 3.5 lakhs. Each branch was attached with small bells.

Tamilnadu Handicrafts Development Corporation which was established in 1973 is in charge of the handicrafts sector in the state of Tamilnadu. The main objectives of the Corporation is to preserve the antique crafts of Tamilnadu and uplift the standard of living of the craftsmen by marketing assistance to the craftsmen of Tamilnadu and other states.

This exhibition comprises bronze statues, brass oil lamps, Thanjavur art plates and painting, silver and gold plated jewellery, Rudraksha, American diamond jewellery, Hyderabad natural pearls, birth stones (shaped and uncut), fashion jewellery, precious and semi precious stones, dress materials, bedspread and pillow covers, Terracotta products, and many more collections from various states for sale.

Over 20 artists from different states are directly participating and selling their products in this exhibition. This exhibition continues till November 3rd.
