Bengaluru:   A three-year-old male leopard was killed in a road accident after being run over by an unidentified vehicle on NICE Road on Kanakpura road on Tuesday night. Few passers-by who found the leopard lying dead on the road informed the forest department.

Assistant Conservator of Forest, I.M. Nagraj said that the leopard had died due to internal injuries. It looks like the leopard, while it tried to cross the road, was hit by a speeding four-wheeler. Due to the accident, the spinal chord and the live of the leopard was damaged leading to its instant death, he said.

We have asked the authority concerned to put-up speed brakers and sign boards since many wild animals have died in the recent past in similar accidents.

In October last year, a female leopard was killed in a road accident after being run over by an unidentified vehicle near Bannerghatta Biological Park on Anekal Road.

Studies shows that as many as 25 leopards have died in road accidents in Karnataka since 2009 and 19 of them have died outside protected areas.
