Mandya: Heavy rains accompanied by thunder and lightning caused havoc in various parts of Mandya district on Thursday night. Two canals near Srirangapatna breached and nearby low-lying areas were inundated.
The Devaraya Canal breached near Pump House near Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) reservoir and inundated paddy fields, while the Virija Canal near Bidarahalli Hundi developed a minor breach.
The damages were noticed at 5 a.m. Subsequently, officials of the Irrigation Department took up work to repair the canals.
Sub-standard works
Irrigation officials said areas around Pump House, Bidarahalli Hundi and some other parts near Srirangapatna received heavy rain from 10 p.m. on Thursday to 2 a.m. on Friday. Heavy showers had resulted in increased water-levels in canals and damaged them, officials said.
However, the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) blamed the breach on sub-standard works. Water gushed out of the breaches at both the places and inundated crops in several acres in the area, a senior KRRS leader told The Hindu.
K.R. Pet
Meanwhile, the rain-waters inundated some low-lying areas in K.R. Pet, revenue officials said.
