A 52-year-old Mulund resident became the latest victim of dengue in the city as the number of dengue positive cases continues to rise. According to Fortis Hospital sources, the man died of respiratory complications on Saturday morning. This is the fourteenth dengue death in the city.
Dr S Narayani, facility director, Fortis Hospital, said, “The patient was taking treatment in a private nursing home and was tested positive for dengue there. His condition worsened so he was transferred to our hospital. He had acute respiratory distress syndrome, a complication associated with dengue and was on ventilator. We tried our best but we lost him this (Saturday) morning.”
K Radhakrishnan was admitted in the nursing home on 8th November with fever. According to BMC, he had convulsions at that time, so his family decided to shift him to Fortis Hospital on 11th November. Radhakrishnan tested positive for both dengue tests – the NS1 antigen test and the antibody positive test.
Radhakrishnan, who worked as a senior cashier in a corporate office in Tilak Nagar, was also administered platelets after his count dipped sharply, said his family members. According to them, he had multi-organ failure, which led to his death.
Confirming the death, Dr Mangala Gomare, head of epidemiology department in BMC said, “The hospital has notified us. We are yet to get the medical case papers of the patient. We are told that he had tested positive for dengue. As of now, we will consider it as suspected a dengue death,” said Dr Gomare.
After light showers hit the city, the doctors are worried that dengue cases will spike further. The BMC’s health department is requesting Mumbaikars to ensure water accumulation is avoided to stop breeding of the aedes mosquito. So far, dengue has already claimed thirteen lives, including a 23-year-old resident doctor from KEM Hospital.
