Kottayam: Continuing with its ‘ghar wapasi’ drive, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad on Thursday conducted the event in Kerala’s Kottayam district where 59 people were ‘re- converted’ to Hinduism. While one family reportedly was Muslim, all others who pariticipated in the event were Christians. The event took place in two temples.

The government has distanced itself from such events saying that the it has nothing to do with any conversion or reconversion. They have also said that they are in favour of introducing an anti-conversion Bill.

The Congress yet again criticised the alleged forced conversions. “The silence of PM on VHP’s conversion activities implies that he is also responsible in some way,” Congress leader Rashid Alvi said.

Earlier this week, the VHP had ‘re-converted’ over 200 tribal Christians to Hinduism by holding rituals at Aranai village in Valsad district of Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Gujarat. The right-wing outfit had said the re-conversion was “voluntary” and not by force.

A similar incident was also reported from BJP-ruled Chhattisgarh where a party MP had claimed 39 tribal Christians were re-converted to Hinduism in Naxal-hit Bastar district in October this year.
