Mangaluru, March 17: A youth Rajesh (24), from Sorab in Shimoga district, attempted to commit suicide by consuming some toxic substance at Pandeshwar police station on Monday March 16th and was immediately admitted to the hospital.
Rajesh has been accused of abduction of a minor girl from Puttur and has been charged under different sections of POCSO Act.
It is gathered that Rajesh, runs a Paan stall in Bengaluru. About a year ago, he used to visit a relative who was being treated at KMC Hospital in Manipal. During the same period, a 14-year-old girl from Puttur also paid frequent visits to this hospital to see her relative. Both of them came to know about each other, and this friendship soon blossomed into an affair. They used to meet frequently, it is said.
On the morning of March 15th, when both of them were seen together at the service bus stand at Hampankatta in the city, the duo were taken into custody and Rajesh was booked under POCSO Act and was also charged for abducting a minor girl. Later the girl was handed over to Prajna Counselling Centre.
Sources said that, on Monday at about 3.15 am, when Rajesh was being questioned, he suddenly removed a tin out of his bag and consumed the contents. He also said that they were in deep love, and as their families were unhappy with their affair, they had decided to commit suicide together. He had stated that both had prepared a death note on March 9th, and had kept the poison in advance in their bags to consume.
Cops have stated that Rajesh is being treated in the hospital and is showing signs of recovery.
