Bengaluru: For those familiar with Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s iconic Parinda (1989), his Hollywood debut, Broken Horses would have rang quite a few bells. There were the brothers and the horrific story behind the gang lord’s fear of fire.
The action has shifted from Mumbai to the U.S.-Mexico border and Anna Seth has been replaced by Vincent D’Onofrio. The film will be released on April 10.
“ Parinda was the starting point for Broken Horses ,” said Chopra at a press conference following the screening of the film.
The evolution included the elder brother Buddy (Jackie Shroff’s character in Parinda ) being simple minded.
“The character was not working. However, once we introduced the idea of him being slow, it worked.”
Chopra said, “This is more than a film. It is a dream. I don’t like to be in my comfort zone. After 3 Idiots , anyone else would have made 4 Idiots. I like to challenge myself. It was also to prove a point that there is more to Bollywood than song, dance and melodrama. I grew up in a small town and learnt English when I was 16. If I could make a film in Hollywood, for the young people of Bengaluru and other Indian cities, the world is their playground.”
Bengaluru is the first Indian city to have a screening of the film.
Broken Horses has got glowing words of praise from Hollywood directors; James Cameron ( Avatar ) called it an “artistic triumph”.
Chopra says, “I felt like I was out of film school! I am 62 and feel 40 and this film makes me feel 25.”
