Police has got some clues about the accused and we are confident of getting the accursed in custody soon. The crime sort is not yet known yet. Rickshaw driver may be an experienced man so he could drive fast in the late night and escape.

Even as police intensified their investigations into the alleged abduction and sexual assault of a medical student at Manipal, students in Udupi,  came out on the streets to protest against the incident.

Coming close on the heels of the gang rape of a para-medical course student in Delhi, the incident in the education hub of the state prompted the student bodies irrespective of their affiliation to condemn the incident.

Taking note of the gravity of the situation, home minister KJ George is expected to visit Manipal on Sunday, said Pratap Reddy, inspector general of police (Western Range). In a related development chief minister Siddaramaiah told reporters in Bangalore that police is taking all steps to ensure the early arrest of the accused. Pratap Reddy said eight police teams have been set up to nab the accused and that police had gained clues about them.

Observing that given the place where the alleged sexual assault was carried out, it is evident that the accused are locals who had intimate knowledge of the area.

“One of the three accused is evidently an auto rickshaw driver and only such a person can manoeuvre the vehicle adroitly in the area in which the student, hailing from Thiruvananthapuram, was abducted and later gang raped,” IGP surmised, adding police are quizzing auto drivers in the area.

Doctors and counsellors are eliciting information from the victim about the incident; IGP said adding that the student is still in a state of mental shock.

“We are striving to collect details about the incident through trained counsellors and doctor,” he said, adding woman police officer has been directed to be with the victim, who is undergoing treatment at the hospital for a minor fracture on her leg and is under observation at the medical college hospital.
