A court in the eastern oasis town of Al Ain sentenced a citizen from another Gulf country to five years in prison and ordered his deportation from the UAE after he was convicted of embezzling nearly Dh122 million from a 118-year-old Emirati man.
The defendant was found guilty of forging documents and selling property worth around Dh122 million that belongs to Musabbah Al Dahiri without his knowledge. “The defendant was found guilty of embezzlement, breach of trust and deception after exploiting the old age of the man, who has no children,” Al Bayan daily said.
It said the court also ordered the defendant, identified only as MRK, to pay Dh21,000 as immediate and temporary compensation to the old man. “This case has triggered concern and anger within the local community since Musabbah is a well know personality in the town and has many contributions in several fields,” the Dubai-based Arabic language daily said.
It said Musabbah had set up Al Ain’s first Arabic language daily, which is being studied as part of the UAE’s media history. The paper said it had conducted an interview with Musabbah when he was 98 years old about his life and struggle to start from the scratch in building a big wealth without any “support and assistance” from any one.(E247)
