Mangalore: To bring awareness about Breast Cancer a talk was jointly organized by Lions Club -Mangalore, in association with Kasturba Medical College- Mangalore and St Agnes College for the final year students on August 1 at St Agnes college auditorium.
In the Keynote address Dr Asha Shanbhag said that the Breast Cancer is the dreaded disease in the world. ‘Early detection, precautions, screening, mammograms can prevent people getting Breast Cancer. Regular yearly health check and mammogram is a must for women above 40 and female youth, who reaching age of 20 should also go for check up’, she said.
‘90 % of the breast cancers are detected by women themselves. When women can detect lumps in their breast at a very early stage, surgery can save up to 70 – 80 % of the proven cases. All women beginning from the age of 20 s should be aware regarding breast self examination. Cervical screening can prevent about 80 – 90% of cervical cancers developing’, she said.
St Agnes College Principal Prem AC opined that the education which does not help the common mass of people to equip themselves for the struggle of life, which does not bring out the strength of character, a spirit of philanthropy, and the courage of a lion — is it worth the name?” She further said that having cancer is not only suffered by the person, but people who are dear and near to cancer patient also suffer the pain and agony, she said. Hence it’s always advisable to take precautions and regular checkups when it comes to cancer disease, she added.
