Kundapur;Jan 25: Inaugurating the Udupi district’s ‘Krishi Utsava and flower show-2014’programme held on Jan 25,Saturday,jointly organized by Udupi district Panchayat,Udupi district’s agricultural and horticultural department,Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala,Gramaabhivriddhi programme ® and Udupi district’s Krishi Utsava Anustana Samiti in Koteshwara first grade college ground, Vinaya Kumar Sorake,minister for urban development and district in charge said in his address that there is no question of banning areca nut crop in the state and harmful Gutka has already been banned.
A memorandum stating the medicinal properties of the areca nut and the problems faced by the areca nut farmers has already been submitted to health minister by the delegation. Besides, he also said that since there are abundant coconut growers in the coastal region, government is also thinking of providing reasonable price for the product and to encourage the production of various produces of the coconut, he said.
He also said that in view of infusing confidence among the farmers and creates awareness about the mechanical farming practices and facilities, these two days Krishi utsava has been organized. On the second day of the programme, minister for agriculture will be participating and conversation about the farmers problems, difficulties will be held, he said
In order to give more emphasis for agriculture, Brahmavar Sugar factory and Varahi projects have been created. But since the Brahmavar sugar factory was closed, in order to pay the salaries of the labors and respond to the plights of the workers Rs 12 crore grants were provided. The negotiation to continue sugar factory will be held, he said. The Varahi project, which was to be built at the cost of Rs 9 crore budgets, could have made the lives of the farmers something pure, pleasurable by this time but has not yet completed even after 35 years after spending Rs 400 crore, he added.
He further said that in order to provide better price for the paddy, being the important crop of the region, government is thinking of giving Rs 280 royalty price and to open centre to buy at Rs 1600 in Udupi and Kundapur. In this, it is expected to get Rs 280 more per quintal, he added.
