Principal Advisor to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation E. Sreedharan on Friday expressed his delight at the Metro project for not just being the harbinger of high technology to India from Japan but also for improving work culture and ethics in the country.

“More than the generous funds received from Japan, what I feel more satisfied about is the work culture and ethics that we brought during the making of the metro. People stand in queue, they offer seat to those who need it more than them, clean platforms and soft-spoken, hard working staff – these are my rewards too,” said Dr. Sreedharan at a reception hosted in his honour by the Embassy of Japan here. In November last, he was conferred the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star award by the Government of Japan.

The former managing director of the DMRC also lauded former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit – who was present at the event – for giving him “unflinching support even in the hardest of times” and enabling the Delhi Metro to become a reality.

Ambassador of Japan to India Takeshi Yagi said, “The Delhi Metro has brought tremendous benefit to the people and the urban landscape. It removes 1.2 lakh vehicles per day from the Delhi roads, it has shortened the average commuting time by one hour per day, it has increased predictability of public transport with an average of 2.5 minutes interval of services during the peak hours and a delay of less than a minute; it is estimated to have cut down the carbon emission by 22 million tonne per annum.”
