The city saw a spurt in suicides on the weekend with the police recording as many as 10 cases on Friday and Saturday.

These include four in Sriramapura police station limits alone on Friday. In one of the cases, a 34-year-old homemaker, Vijayalakshmi, hanged herself in her house at Lakshminarayanapura. Police suspect ill-health could have driven her to end her life. Another housewife Ratnamma (45), a resident of Ramachandrapura, also hanged herself. In this case too, police suspect ill-health.

The third incident in the locality involved a 14-year-old girl, Kokila, who had recently passed her class IX exams. She hung herself in her house at Okalipuram. Police suspect the girl took the step due to worries about her education. The fourth case is that of a 50-year-old man who was suffering from stomach ache for the last 10 years. Police said the deceased, Rajamanikya, was a construction worker. He was found unconscious in the bathroom of his house after he hung himself.

The other cases
A 36-year-old scientist working with a private company, was found hanging at his parents’ house in C K Park on Saturday morning. Praveen had recently separated from his wife due to marital disputes. Police suspect this may have led him to taking his life. An electrician, Raju (27), was found hanging at an under-construction building owned by his family in Rajiv Gandhi Colony, Shivajinagar on Saturday morning. Preliminary investigations indicate that a love affair gone wrong could have led to the extreme step, police said.

A beautician committed suicide in K R Puram on Friday night. The deceased, Reshma (22), had objected to her husband Javed going out with his friends but he refused to listen to her. When he returned on Saturday morning, he found his wife hanging in the house.

A vegetable vendor, Samapangi (30), killed himself by consuming poison over a marital dispute on Friday evening in Kalasipalya. He had recently separated from his wife of five years due to differences between them. Police suspect this may have driven him to end his life.

A 36-year-old homemaker, K Sunanda, hanged herself in her flat at Bhuvaneshwari Nagar on Friday evening. She was married to a small-time Kannada actor, Sunil Kumar, for 17 years. Police suspect marital disputes to be the trigger.

A class IX student Revathi (14) hanged herself at Shantipura on Friday afternoon. Quoting family members, the police said that the girl was suffering from severe stomach ache and had not gone to school on Friday.
