Dubai Municipality plans parks, public squares in five areas at a cost of Dh17m.

Dubai’s green lungs will expand to five areas that lacked public gardens, with the civic body announcing five projects of residential parks and public squares at an estimated cost of Dh17 million.

Al Lusaily and Mankhool will get their first ever residential parks while public squares with gardens will add greenery to Al Muhaisna 3 and Al Warqa 4. The Satwa Reservoir Park, a park built around the landmark reservoir in Satwa, will be rebuilt to become the first park in Dubai that will completely operate with solar power.

Announcing the projects, Director-General of Dubai Municipality Hussain Nasser Lootah said the projects came as a complement to the policy of expanding green areas and in order to distribute them and provide entertainment services in a balanced manner to all areas of the emirate.

“The contracts (have) been awarded and the projects are currently at the preparation stage,” he said in a statement.

He said the municipality aims to make the city of Dubai one of most beautiful and green cities of the world through its current and future projects based on strategic objectives and vision to build an excellent city that provides the essence of success and comfort of sustainable living.

Lootah said the civic body had been striving to provide all the requirements of social and family life in the city of Dubai. “We are serious about moving forward according to the expectations of the world, in line with the directives of our wise leadership.”

Taleb Abdul Karim Julfar, director of Public Parks and Horticulture Department said the total number of parks and public places in the Emirate of Dubai reached 103, including six major parks, two open beaches, four pond parks, 33 residential parks and 58 public squares.

“Dubai parks are the most important and busiest places in the country in terms of the number of visitors and events organised by various community groups on special occasions such as holidays and celebrations. The department is proud of its excellence in providing unique services ensuring the highest standards of comfort and cleanliness as well as maintaining the environment.”

Al Lusaily residential park will spread over 1.7 hectares with a jogging track, football court and sports equipment for warming up. It also has family areas and shaded resting chairs apart from basic services like toilets, security cabin, store, paved walking tracks, shaded plaza with wooden umbrellas, and areas for children’s games.

Solar-powered lights and integrated network of irrigation are other attractions in the park with plants and trees protected by a metal fence.

According to the municipality, the Satwa Reservoir Park will be the first neighbourhood park that fully functions with solar power. The old park was established in an ancient area with a landmark of the region, which is the water reservoir tower in Al Satwa area.

The Dubai Municipality said it would rebuild this park to be the first park in the Emirate of Dubai that works without connecting electrical power from the public electricity line.

Area of the park is totalled at 1.5 hectares and the reservoir tank tower will be maintained along with all basic facilities.

Mankhool, which currently lacks a neighbourhood park, will receive one that will spread over 1.3 hectares. This will be a multipurpose park for families, children and youth.

The Public Square in Al Muhaisna 3 will be the first recreational space in the locality with elements of multiple services. Solar-powered lighting and irrigation are the highlights of this garden in an area of one hectare.

The Public Square in Al Warqa’a 4 will be the first gardening project to meet the requirements of residents in this area. The square will be built in 0.60 hectares and will have several key elements such as shaded chairs, beautiful wooden umbrellas, waste bins surrounded by plants and trees with fascinating views, paved walking tracks, solar-powered lighting and metal fence.
