Delhi: A Delhi police constable was murdered on Monday while another was left severely injured when some miscreants opened fire on them early Monday morning in Outer Delhi’s Vijay Vihar. The incident occurred after the policemen confronted the men over their suspicious activities.
Senior police officials reached the spot immediately, while the Crime Branch and Special Cell have also been roped in to probe into the case.
Preliminary investigations revealed that when the constables found their activities suspicious, they went up to them and questioned. When they could not come up with a substantial explanation, the policemen left their bike and tried to take them to the nearby Vijay Vihar police station. That’s when the suspects, around three to four in number, opened fire on both the constables from close range and fled.
“The incident occurred around 2 a.m. today when the two constables were on night patrol on their bike and found some persons sitting in an auto in the L block. The attackers seemed seasoned criminals as they even took away the policemen’s arms,” said a police official. Constable Jagvir Singh died on the spot while his colleague Narendra, who got shot in his back, was critically injured in the incident. He is fighting for life at a city hospital, the police said.
“We are investigating the matter and an FIR has been registered under the sections of murder, attempt to murder, Arms Act and others. We have designated teams to probe into the matter and nab the unidentified attackers,” the senior police official said.
On Saturday night a similar incident took place in Central Delhi where three men opened fire on two constables in Connaught Place area. No one was injured in the incident and one of the attackers was arrested. Later, the police arrested two accused from Uttar Pradesh.
