New Delhi: Days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Beti Bachao campaign, Wing Commander Puja Thakur of the Indian Air Force did India proud as she led the Guard of Honour at Rashtrapati Bhawan during the ceremonial reception for US President Barack Obama.
This is the first time a woman officer has led the Guard of Honour for a major visiting dignitary at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
It is learnt that women officers will also play a leading role in tomorrow’s Republic Day parade, in which President Obama will be the chief guest.
In a hard-hitting speech earlier, PM Modi said, “we cannot call ourselves citizens of 21st century by practising such a crime (female foeticide) and we were by our mindset belonged to 18th century when daughters were killed soon after they were born.”
Pleading to end this ill practice, he said, “The Prime Minister of this country had come to them like a beggar and was begging for the lives of daughters.”
