JAMMU, October 23:  One head constable of Border Security Force (BSF) died and seven others, including a civilian, sustained injuries as the Pakistani troops continued its intense shelling from across the International Border (IB), in Jammu on Tuesday night.

Inspector General of Police Jammu Rajesh Kumar told The Hindu that firing was reported from a large number of spots on Tuesday night. Other sources said that as many as 50 Indian posts were targeted in Arnia, RS Pora, Pargwal, Akhnoor and Ramgarh sectors on Tuesday night.

Mr. Rajesh said that head constable Mukesh Mena of BSF got killed and three jawans injured when a mortar exploded close to Chenaz Post in RS Pora sector. At least one civilian was also injured. He said that three more BSF jawans got injured in another incident at a different post on the IB.

All the seven injured have been evacuated and admitted to different hospitals for medical treatment. They were all reportedly stable.

Sources said that the firing started at 2330 hours on Tuesday night and continued intermittently till 0400 hours on Wednesday. The Indian security forces retaliated to the offensive effectively, a BSF official said. He said that it was the 30th violation of the bilateral ceasefire agreement signed by India and Pakistan in November 2003, which did hold for about 10 years until the Pakistani Rangers and other forces initiated violations along the LoC and IB earlier this year.
