Mangaluru, November 5: The renowned Nethravathi-Phalguni Jodukare Kambla, will be held at Guttumane in Pilikula on December 29th Monday.
The Apex Court has banned the traditional sport of Tamilnadu Known as “Jallikattu” involving buffaloes and cattle, since it is violence on animals. So the district administration has decided to make violence-free Kambla this year by informing the owners of the buffaloes to refrain from canning the animal.
District in-charge Minister B Ramanath Rai who participated in a preparatory meet said, with the intension of promoting the traditional sport, which is the identity of the region, even this year, district administration and Dr Shivaram Karanth Pilikula Nisargadhama will organise the Kambla as part of DK district Karavali Utsava, which is funded by state government.
Since Union Cabinet Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi had issued a notice against the canning activities on the buffaloes during a Kambla held at Bantwal in 2013, it was decided.
DK and Udupi districts Kambla Committee Chief Dr Baradibeedu Jeevandhar Ballal who briefed about the programme said, “The competitions will be held in six categories, i.e., negilu – junior and senior, hagga –
Junior and senior, adda halage and kane halage. The winner and runner up in each category will get gold coins of one sovereign and half sovereign respectively as prizes. In addition to the normal categories, there will be special categories where five selected owners will be awarded cash prize based on their performance”.
Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim said “Nethravathi-Phalguni Jodukare Kambla will be held on the last Saturday and Sunday of every December hereafter and the committee will see to it that this traditional sport will be focussed in the map and details of tourism department.
MCC Mayor Mahabala Maarla, MLC Ivan D’Souza, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Mangalore South MLA J R Lobo, President of Konkani Prachar Sanchalan Roy Castelino, President of State Bus Owners Association Rajavarma Ballal, and others were present in the meet.
