Mangaluru, November 16: Mayor Mahabala Marla revealed to the media on November 14th Friday that, City Library situated at Light-House has been modernized and houses a separate section for children and students.
He said, there are around 3,000 books in Kannada and English for children along with variety of toys.
He revealed that District Lions 317D and district Lioness associations have donated six computers to the library. A browsing centre has also been started in the library and the readers can browse for an hour by paying Rs10.
The aspirants of KAS/IAS/CET/Bank exams/GRE/MAT/SAT and other competitive exams can utilize the library. About 2,500 books worth Rs10lakh have been added to the library in 2013-14. Along with books in Kannada, English, Hindi, Tulu, Konkani and Urdu languages, the library committee has decided to include books in Beary language as well, said Mahabala Maarla.
The central library has 15 units, one library at ESI hospital, one at community children’s centre, one at district jail and a mobile library.
National Library Week will be organised at the Central library on November 17th at 11 am.
The function will be inaugurated by MLA J R Lobo. Literateur Siddalingaiah will be the chief guest. Competitions such as ‘Trash to treasure’, drawing competitions, pick and speak, fancy dress, elocution, reading Kannada fluently, essay writing, story-telling competitions were held at four libraries in Mangaluru on November 14th Friday as a part of the National library week.
On November15th, action song, painting, patriotic song, essay writing (Kudroli library), pick and speak and painting(Gandhinagara), painting, essay (silvergate),painting and essay writing (Kadri) competitions will be held.
On November 16th, painting competition will be held at Surathkal and essay writing at Pragathinagara.
The Mayor said, library was upgraded at a cost of Rs 50 lakh. More children and students are expected to make the best use of this library situated in the heart of the city.
