Mangaluru, December 8: Union Minister for Law D V Sadananda Gowda who spoke here on Sunday, December 7th after receiving memorandum from Kambala Samithi against the ban on Kambala, the traditional sports of undivided Dakshina Kannada

district said, that the officials should have discussed the issue with the Ministers from the district before banning Kambala.

He opined that, they could have moved forward after obtaining legal opinion and the decision to ban Kambala was taken in a hurry. He said that, he would seriously consider the memorandum submitted by the Kambala Samithi.

A case pertaining to arecanut is placed before the Supreme Court. A research on the medicinal values found in arecanut conducted by a medical college in Chennai will be submitted to the court.. A delegation of MPs will meet Union Health Minister shortly to convince him not to ban arecanut.

Kasturirangan Report:

Sadananda Gowda said that Kasturirangan report on conservation of Western Ghats would affect the people residing adjacent to the forest area. The report was prepared by viewing satellite images. Hence, there are differences in the reality and the report. This has been confirmed by the Green Tribunal.

He said, the Center had directed the State to conduct an in depth survey about the already identified ecologically sensitive areas. However, the State government was alarmed only after the receiving a remainder from the Center. The implementation of Kasturirangan committee report will affect the residents of Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, Dakshina Kannada and Shivamogga. The state government ought to consider the issue seriously. He also said that, the government should submit a detailed report on those who will be affected.

Gowda said in the ongoing winter session, the process of banning 90 old laws will be placed in the parliament.

K Gunapala Kadamba, convener, Kambala Samrakshane, Nirvahane mathu Tarabethi Academy said that following the Supreme Court direction, even traditional Kambala could not be observed and the tradition has come to a halt. This law need to be modified.

He said, is impossible to ban Kambala which is observed as a vow. Due to the ban, more than 5,000 persons are unemployed.
