MANGALORE: KMC Hospital, Mangalore, part of Manipal Health Enterprises, which started cancer treatment service in Mangalore in 1992 has treated nearly 15,000 patients so far.

Pramod Alagharu, Unit Head, KMC Hospital Mangalore said: At KMC Hospital, we aspire to educate the masses about the various types of cancer and the need for early detection.

According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, 12.7 million people around the world are detected with cancer every year and 7.6 million people die from this deadly disease.

Dr. Krishna Prasad, Medical Oncologist, KMC Hospital, Mangalore, says: Cancer is not just a health issue but a growing global epidemic. It is characterized by abnormal cell growth and the ability of tumour cells to spread throughout the body. Since there are different types of cancer, the symptoms vary widely between different conditions and different people. There are also instances where cancers do not produce symptoms at all, or symptoms only appear at advanced stages.” “Cancer mortality can be reduced if cases are detected and treated early” he added.
