Mangalore, May 22: Gopal, President of the ‘Janaspandana Jagruti Samiti has urged Dakshina Kannada district administration to prevent illegal sand mining on the Phalguni river bank in Muthuru village of Mangalore taluk, on May 22,Wednesday.

He alleged that illegal sand mining had been going on for the past three four years in Muthur village, where nearly 500 families are residing. The movement of earthmovers, tippers and crushers on the river bank not only will have a bad impact on the environment but also disturb the school authorities of government higher primary  school, situated near the sand mining site to conduct classes smoothly.

Gopal, further alleged that despite staging a protest one month ago near the bank and complaining several times to police and deputy commissioner, no required action has been taken against illegal sand mining so far.

As a result of daily transportation of sand in trucks, houses in Muthur village are filled with considerable amount of dust and thereby creating a room for lungs related diseases.

If the district administration does not take any action to curb the illegal activities of sand mind, Samiti in co-ordination with Dalit organizations will stage a mega protest in Mangalore soon, he warned.
