Mangaluru, January 23: The 26th Road Safety Week -2015 is being held at Police Community Hall in the city from Thursday January 22nd to January 28th, under the collaboration of Dakshina Kannada district administration, transport department and police department.
Prior to the inaugural programme, an awareness drive on road safety was held in the city in which children from various schools had participated.
The event was inaugurated by S R Bansal, the Chairman and Managing Director of Corporation Bank, Mangaluru on Thursday, January 22nd.
MLA JR Lobo, presided over the function. He said, violating the traffic rules was one of the prime factors which caused road mishap. He also advised the concerned officials to interact each other and implement certain plans which could reduce the accidents.
Mangaluru City Police Commissioner S Murugan said, several proposals are placed before the state police department to implement CCTV cameras and traffic signals at various traffic junctions, and efforts are being made to upgrade Mangaluru into a ‘safe city’.
A B Ibrahim, Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner said that public involvement with respect to following road safety and traffic rules was very poor in Mangaluru city. He said, chapters on road safety should be included in textbooks for primary classes in order to make the children aware of traffic rules.
Six persons from the district namely, Hasanabba, Sahan Banu, J Abdul Raouf, Nelson Pereira and Velmurugan were felicitated in the programme for their selfless service towards accident victims and promoting road safety.
Chief Guest on this occasion, Dr S D Sharanappa, DK Superintendent of Police; also spoke during the programme.
Regional Transport Officer, Afzal Ahmed Khan, welcomed the gathering. ACP (Traffic) Uday Naik proposed the vote of thanks. Assistant RTO- G S Hegde, compeered the program. State Bus Owners Federation President Rajavarma Ballal, Reserve Police commandant, teachers and school children were present.
