MANGALORE : Prof. Dr. Indrani Karunasagar, Director, Research and Development, Nitte University was awarded the National Technology Development Award by Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister for Science & Technology & Earth Sciences, at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi on May 11, 2015, which is observed as National Technology Day to commemorate India’s achievement in nuclear technology as demonstrated in Pokharan II.
The award instituted by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, recognises outstanding technologies developed by Indian scientists.
The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakhs, a citation, medal and a trophy. Dr. Indrani Karunasagar has 6 patents and 3 commercialised technologies. She is the Dean of Faculty of Biological Sciences at Nitte University and a Senior Scientist of International repute and a recipient of several National and International awards.
She is the Director of UNESCO Microbial Resources Center (MIRCEN), Paris and Advisor, International Foundation for Science, Sweden. As the Director of Biomedical Sciences programme at Nitte University, she has introduced various new courses at Masters and Ph.D level, which include Biomedical Science, Food safety and Biotechnology, Marine Microbiology and Biotechnology from the current year 2015-16 and Environmental Biotechnology and Toxicology, Molecular Medicine and Cancer Genetics from2016-17.
