Mangaluru, July 31: The Fishing of the season will begin from August 1st onwards. This year fishing was banned for two months from June 1st to July 31st.

During this ban period, only traditional fishing boats were permitted for fishing and all other boats were banned from fishing. Many fishermen say that this year, the traditional fishermen had got very less number of fishes. In the previous years, the deep sea fishing was banned from June 15th to August 10th.

As the ban will end on July 31st, the motor boats will begin fishing from tomorrow. Across the coasts of  Karnataka, over 3,000 persin boats, more than 2,500 troll boats and about 300 deep sea fishing boats will venture into the sea for fishing. This year, the fish crop might be similar to the last year, there are very less chances of major differences, opine the officials of Department of Fisheries.

Compared to 2013-2014, in 2014-2015 there is a small rise in fish yield. In 2013-2014, 1,50,525 metric tonnes of fishes were caught which were worth Rs 1,075 crores. In 2013-2014, 1,48,272 metric tonnes of fishes were caught which were worth Rs 827 crores. When compared to the last two years about 2,000 metric tonnes more fishes were caught in the coasts of Dakshina Kananda, informed the Deputy Director of Fisheries M D Prasad.

This time the fishing season will begin before the Sea pooja. Usually the pooja to the Sea will be offered during August 15th. So, there are less chances that some fishermen venture into the Sea on August 1st for fishing. The fishermen are anxious as the fish yield obtained by the traditional fishermen was less during the rainy season, informed Vasudev Bolur.
