Mayor directs officials to take appropriate actions for the protection of water pipeline.

Mangaluru, August 07: It is regrettable that the Mangaluru city residents suffered for five days without water supply as the officials failed to take protective measures regarding the water pipeline. The concerned officials have been clearly directed to look after the safety of the pipeline carrying water from Thumbe to the city, informed Mayor Jacintha Vijay Alfred.

Addressing a press meet at her office in the city, on Wednesday she said, if the land owners of the place where the pipeline has passed through feel that there is a need of connecting road, they have to obtain the permission of the Mangalore City Corporation and mandatorily take the suggestions from the engineer. The acquired land where the pipeline has passed through will be surveyed, the border of the land will be marked and colour plug and indication boards will be erected there. Measures will be taken to ensure that such problems do no repeat in future, said the Mayor.

For the repair works of the pipeline, 2 Hitachi machines of 0.70 tonnes capacity, JCB machines, 2 tippers, 1 K W single piece generator and with the help of labourers, day and night the operation was carried out to repair the pipe, she explained.

At the same time, leakage was observed in another point, as the soil was dumped in that spot and once again, 2 Hitachi machines of 2.10 capacity, Hitachi machine of 1.75 capacity, 20 H P submersible pump, three 5 HP pump-set, two 3 HP pump-set, 40 KWatt and 120 KWatt three piece generator were used for the repair works.

The repair works was delayed due to the intermittent rains and also due to the sinking of clay soil, she said.

The city project and development standing committee president Deepak Poojary said the Deputy Commissioner has directed to conduct a survey through the revenue department.

Deputy-Mayor Purushotam Chittrapura, tax amount and appeal standing committee president Harinath, public health and education social justice standing committee president Prakash B Salyan, Accounts standing committee president Keshava, Corporator Lanslot Pinto, acting MCC Commissioner Gokuldas Nayak were present in the press meet.

The problem had aroused as the pipeline of the ADB work burst for the first time. The main reason for the water pipeline burst near Kannur is due to the dumping of construction waste and soil in that place and within a week, FIR will be filed against those who had dumped those waste in the spot, informed former Mayor Shashidhar Hegde.

Measures will be taken to get the payment done by the parties which have dumped the soil in the spot towards the cost incurred for the pipeline repair. Along with this, a separate committee will be formed to take care of the safety of the water supply pipeline from Thumbe to various parts of the city and also a staff will be employed to look after the pipeline, he informed.
