Be prepared to tackle calamities: directs Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim.

Mangaluru, August 07: The public, and private sector giant business entities, airport, and railway department must be ready to face any sort of possible calamities that take place in Dakshina Kannada district said, Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim.

The Deputy Commissioner chaired a review meet of the district disaster management authority on Thursday, August 06th.

Frequent mock shows related to the industrial accidents, calamity handling machines and amenities related to all the businesses must also be showcased. During the situations of leakage in the pipelines and in cases of other incidents, the role of the public’s and employing safety measures should be educated to the local residents, directed the DC.

Oil pollution is taking place at the point where the oil from foreign countries is unloaded. Concerned to this, although the discussions have taken place with the NMPT and the user business men, it was not fruitful as the MRPL failed to co-operate. In the sea, enormous pollution is taking place. To control this, Rs 8 crores of equipments is needed. Half of this expense will be given by the central government. The MRPL is importing nearly 90% of the oil in the remaining four crores of rupees and this amount should be paid by the MRPL, said an officer from NMPT. For this the MRPL officials said, such huge sum cannot be paid. For this, the DC directed the heads of both the companies to discuss and arrive at a solution.

Discussions were held about the no fly zone. As the point where the oil is unloaded in the NMPT is toxic, the 500 metres zone should be declared as fishing free zone, urged a NMPT official, and it was decided to send a proposal to the state government.

SP Dr SD Sharanappa discussed along with the railway officials about the measures to prevent theft in the Mangaluru- Bengaluru oil pipeline, measures to avoid the train mishaps due to land slide and other calamities on the Western Ghats between Subramanya to Sakleshpura.

ACP Madan Gaonkar suggested that the petrol bunk staffs, especially the security staffs working in the night shifts must be trained on the usage of the fire extinguishers. Information was given on the trainings which were given by the private companies.

Director of Mangaluru Airport J T Radhakrishna, MCC superintendent engineer Shivshankar Murthy, MCC acting commissioner Gokuldas Prabhu, MRPL administrative director H Kumar and others were present.

Deputy Director of factory and boilers department, K G Nanjappa compeered the program.
