Mangaluru, August 11: Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim, Mayor Jacintha Alfred along with MCC officials on Tuesday August 11th visited Pachanady dumping yard following complaints from publics alleging of unclean surroundings posing a threat to the health of the residents in the area.
During the visit, the local residents complained that due to the dumping yard here, the open wells and borewells in the area were contaminated; as a result the water was not fit for drinking. Over 40 families live in this area. They said that street dogs cause great problems in the area. It is not only danger to the residents, but also there are possibilities of harmful diseases getting spread.
Though it was complained to officials a number of times, no action has been initiated so far, they said. They also urged the DC to shift the dumping yard and gave a memorandum in this regard.
Speaking to the media, deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim said, we visited the spot after receiving complaints from the local residents. The quality of dumping yard is poor. I have directed the MCC to follow the guidelines and also informed the mayor to hold a meeting on Wednesday August 12th to discuss on issues like safety, hygiene and maintenance at dumping yard. I have also instructed the MCC to form a committee to review the process of dumping the garbage and the committee will visit the dumping yard every week to review the situation.
Mayor Jacintha Alfred speaking to the media said, the dumping yard is facing cleanliness problems. The residents in the area are facing drinking water problems. Based on their complaints we visited the spot and tomorrow a meeting will be held with health officers, Antony waste Management Company, and the public.
The basic problems will be sorted out within a week and gradually we will try to solve all the other problems faced by the residents, assured Mayor Jacintha Vijay Alfred.
