Mangaluru, August 22: The prices of onions have shot up in Dakshina Kannada District. This price hike has put the consumers in deep trouble.
In the biggest Onion market situated in Lasalgaon of Maharashtra, the retail prices of Onion per quintal have raised to approximately Rs 5,000. This also has impacted on the Coastal Karnataka.
The retail prices of the Onions per quintal recorded in Mangaluru was Rs 4,800 for new and Rs 5,500 for old. The cost per kilograms of Onion was recorded as Rs 60 and Rs 50 respectively.
The shooting prices of Onions in the market have put the consumers in trouble. Adding to it is the lack of Onion supply in the state. The price rise has greatly affected the preparations of dishes in hotels using Onions. One of the hotel owner said, the invested amount is not earned by selling the dishes prepared using Onions.
On Thursday, a sudden price raise of Rs 400 was witnessed. The current retail price of the Onions is Rs 50 per kilogram and the prices of the loose onions have risen from Rs 65 to Rs 70.
With the abrupt raise in the price of the Onions, the Hoteliers, middle class and poor people are finding it difficult to cope-up with this price hike.
