Mangaluru, September 30: The Mangaluru CCB police arrested a notorious chain snatcher on Tuesday September 29th who remained elusive since two years.

The arrested has been identified as Tausif Syyed (30), a resident near Jeppu market.

Tausif Syyed is accused in many cases of chain snatching in various police stations across Dakshina Kannada and Kasargod districts.

Since two years, Tausif had gone absconding. Tausif Syyed has been handed over to Mangaluru south police for further investigations.

In 2013, Tausif along with his accomplice had arrived in a bike, approached Uma S Mendon, who was walking along the Mulihitlu Ferry road and had snatched a mangalsutra chain from her. In another case that took place at Attavar, Tausif and his accomplice had approached a pedestrian named Surprita and on the pretext of asking for directions, had snatched a chain from her neck and sped away in the bike. Like this, Tausif had snatched chains from many women on the pretext of asking directions, said the police.

Five cases are registered against Thausif in Ullal, Manjeshwar and Sullia police stations.

The police recently arrested his elder brother Syyed Sahil, who used to be Tausif’s accomplice in chain snatching. The gold chains had been recovered by the police.

Under the directions of police commissioner S Murugan, guided by DCP K M Shantaraju and DCP Dr Sanjeev M Patil; the operation was led by CCB inspector Valentine D’Souza along with sub-inspector Shyamsunder.
