Mangaluru, October 31:  Ganja worth thousands of rupees that were seized by the DK district police in various cases were burnt and destroyed as per the orders passed by the court; at the premises of DC’s office here on Friday, October 30th in the presence of the DK district Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim, the concerned police officers and the members of the Narcotics and Psychotropic Sub-Science association.

The court had disposed off the cases in which the ganja had been seized. Hence the court ordered the deputy commissioner and other officials concerned to destroy ganja.

Speaking on this occasion, A B Ibrahim said, many people are getting addicted to drugs and we have been receiving complaints from colleges and railway stations. The society, and especially the youth, should know the consequences of drug abuse. We had a organized meeting with the DGP and other officials and planned on how to get rid of this menace. We have also created a squad to prevent such cases. Let us make our society drug-free, he said.

Seized ganja weighing 18 kgs, worth Rs 5 lakhs, are being burnt and we are doing this publicly as it is dangerous to society. By this, we are trying to convey the message that all must stay away from ganja and other drugs, said the DC.

DK district deputy commissioner of excise L A Manjunath said, two weeks ago, the DC has ordered us to strictly stop abuse and peddling of drugs. Raids were done in Bantwal, Puttur and other areas and cases are file. Some places in Moodshedde were also raided. Ganja is being smuggled from Kerala which is then dried up and sold in small packets. We are also collecting information from the public. The names of informants will not be revealed, he said.
