Mangalore, August 13: In the coastal area due to the rain, which started from end of the May, areca nut cultivation perished in huge amount and not spraying the insect destroyer caused for rots problem. Hence areca nut cultivators are suffering from this problem and now they need responses said Dakshina Kannada district union cooperation bank limited President M. N Rajendra Kumar.
Addressing the media areca nut cultivation decides the economy of farmers. If the crop perishes, then it will effect to their life. In the last year there was good market to areca nut and even had best value. But this time nuts are falling from the tree and due to the bottom decomposing whole farm itself perished, he said.
For one acre of farm farmers spend 50,000 to 60,000 for managing purpose. If the crop grows well, the farmers might have earned Rs. 1, 25,000 of profit. But because of the rain farmers loosed everything, hence agriculture department must draw the attention regarding the issue, he said.
District cooperation bank has provided the loan to 80,000 farmers as Rs. 25,000 each to a acre and totally Rs.49, 443.26 lakhs given as loan to 141281 acres of land. This time it will be problematic to pay back. Hence both the departments must report the government regarding the farmers’ loss. Government must give the relevant value to areca nut and must give special package to develop from the financial problem. He said that he will request the C.M regarding the issue through ministers and MLAs.
