Udupi; Dec 24: After inaugurating two day national symposium on contemporary issues “Concerns and challenges “held under the auspices of Udupi MGM college’s political science division, sponsored by UGC in new Ravindra Mantap,prof.Dr.Valerian Rodrigues,CEO of Delhi Jawaharlal Nehru University’s centre for political studies said in his address that out of total world’s population,17% of the population is there in India alone. In India, where heterogeity is the soul, inequality plays the biggest challenge, he said.

He further said that country is committed to principles of democracy .It has proven over and over again. We have agreed parliamentary democracy. Therefore, all the heterogeneities has got an equal opportunities. Therefore even small groups can get into the system, he added.

However, due to today’s political system, available opportunities are not getting. For example, in our country, out of total population, though 50 % of the share is of women, their share of representation in the parliament is only 10.25%. Similarly out of 13 to 14 % of the Muslim community, only 4.5% members are there in parliament, said Dr.Valerian.

Now, if we come to the matter of civil society, after J.P.Jayaprakash’s revolution in 1970, all of a sudden number of non-government organizations (NGO) has crossed over four million. At one time, these organizations have done a good job to the society, is now sunk in corruption, he added.
