For over two days, mechanic Sudhakar Poojari was stuck under a lift at a construction site. Fortunately, his colleagues found him on Tuesday night in an unconscious state and rushed him to a private hospital, where he is recovering.
It is not clear how Mr. Sudhakar got under the lift at the construction site of a nine-storeyed building of the Prestige group at Kadubeesanahalli, near Marathahalli.
According to his friends, Mr. Sudhakar, a specialised lift mechanic, left his room at Hoodi around 8.30 a.m. on Sunday for the construction site even though it was his day off. “He wanted to collect the drawing plan of the escalator and so he went there,” they said.
On Sunday evening, his roommates panicked as he neither returned to the room nor did he respond to phone calls. They went to look for him at the construction site but did not find him.
“There are seven lifts in the building. We searched in and around six lifts and did not find him. We did not bother looking at the seventh lift as it was stationary on the ninth floor and never used by us. We thought he may have left for Mangalore,” Subhas Shettigar, his lift contractor, said.
His friends were shocked when on Monday morning they discovered he had not reached his house in Mangalore. The friends lodged a missing complaint at the Mahadevapura police station.
He was to leave for Mangalore on Sunday night as he had obtained a Dubai work visa and was getting ready to leave. “He was excited about leaving the country and was going to visit his parents in Mangalore. He wanted to finish his work before that,” Mr. Shettigar said.
The Mahadevapura police said they tried to find the location of the phone. “The mobile phone operators traced the last few calls to Kadubeesanahalli. So, we went to the construction site around 8 p.m. on Tuesday and found him lying unconscious under the shaft of the lift,” said police officer K.S. Nagaraj.
The police said they did not know how he fell to the lower basement. “He is not in a position to speak.”
Mr. Shettigar said: “We will take care of his medical expenses.”
