Chitradurga, Sept 12, 2013: The Hiriyur taluk in the district has received a record rain (over 205 millimetres), after a gap of 25 years.
The heavy rain which pounded the taluk on Wednesday night resulted in the partial collapse of 238 houses, with property losses estimated at Rs 35 lakh, according to tahsildar Srikantamurthy. Of the 238 houses, 68 are in Hiriyur town alone.
The rains on Wednesday and Thursday have brought cheers among the people of the taluk which has been prone to drought in the last four years. The lowlying areas in the town were the worst affected by rainwater which flooded the streets, schools, shops and business establishments.
MLA D Sudhakar visited the rain-affected areas along with a team of Revenue department officials on Thursday.
Agriculture and horticulture crops have been lost in villages around Dharmapur, Chikkajajur and other prominent hobli headquarters of Chitradurga district. Chitradurga city and many places in Davangere district received mild showers on Thursday.
One dead
Hanumanthappa, 80, died and sheep belonging to him also perished when the walls of his house collapsed at Kagalagere village near Chikkajajur in Holalkere taluk of Chitradurga district due to heavy rain on Wednesday night. Tahsildar Channabasappa, district incharge Minister H Anjaneya visited the spot on Thursday.
In Belgaum
Heavy rains lashed the city and surrounding areas for more than an hour on Thursday. Poor visibility forced motorists to use headlights during daylight hours. It has been drizzling in the last three to four days.
In Mangalore
Parts of Dakshina Kannada district received scanty rainfall on Thursday, after a gap of a few days. The situation was similar in Udupi, Kodagu and Chikmagalur districts.
In Shimoga
The heavy showers in Shimoga district on Thursday caused concern among farmers who feared that their crops may be washed away.
There has been a cloudy weather in the district in the last couple of days. Agriculture activities had picked up following excessive showers for about a month and there had been a break for some time.
Mandya gets 30 mm rain
Heavy rains that lashed Mandya district on Thursday left low-lying areas inundated and also caused disruption to vehicular traffic for a while.
According to statistics from State Natural Disaster Management, Mandya received a total of 30 mm rains.
Taluks including Srirangapatna, Pandavapura, Malavalli, and Nagamanagala received below average rainfall. However, Thursday’s rainfall was 25 per cent more than the average rainfall recorded.
The average rainfall in Mandya for the month of September is 111 mm. The district has recored 139 mm in the first 12 days itself.
