GULBARGA, October 3: Paediatrician H. Veerabhadrappa has been elected president of the Karnataka Medical Council (KMC) for a period of five years. He defeated H.N. Ravindra in the elections held in Bangalore on Tuesday.
Coin toss
According to the results announced by Registrar of the KMC K.S.R. Murthy, who was also Returning Officer for the elections, both Dr. Veerabhadrappa and Dr. Ravindra secured seven votes each. The victor was decided by a coin toss.
Prahlad Kanchi was elected vice-president. He defeated Ajaykumar Gududur. Again, both candidates polled seven votes each.
The election to the posts of president and vice-president of the KMC, the apex body for medical professionals, which monitors functioning of doctors, their periodic registration and also looks into complaints against doctors, was being held after 21 years. The last election to the KMC was held in 1992. Dr. Veerabhadrappa was head of the Department of Paediatrics at the Mahadevappa Rampure Medical College and Sangameshwar Women and Child Teaching Hospital for a long time before his retirement. Dr. Veerabhadrappa is also vice-president of the prestigious Dr. P S. Shankar Pratishthan.
Nominated to Syndicate
By virtue of his election as president of KMC, Dr. Veerabhadrappa would automatically be nominated to the Syndicate of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. Senior medical professionals, including Muralidhar Rao, P.S. Shankar, S.S. Patil and S.S. Gubbi, and former Medical Superintendent of the Basaveshwar Teaching and General Hospital S.N. Patil congratulated Dr. Veerabhadrappa.
