NEW DELHI, October 18:  Janata Dal (Secular) president H.D. Deve Gowda has welcomed the initiative taken by Left parties to form a third front.

The party would take a decision on attending a meeting called on October 30 here, in which leaders of the Samajwadi Party and the Janata Dal (United) were also expected to participate, he said.

Talking to The Hindu from Hassan (Karnataka), Mr. Gowda said he wanted to keep both the Congress and the BJP at equidistance and as far as Karnataka was concerned both parties were trying to finish off the JD(S). The JD(S) would contest all 28 seats in the State in the coming Lok Sabha election and there could be talks if Left parties wanted to have a tie-up with the party in Karnataka too like in Kerala.

The former Prime Minister said right now he was concentrating on Karnataka politics and his aim was to intensify his tour in the State to strengthen the party’s base.
