BANGALORE, December 14: The government is thinking of conducting two sessions of the legislature at the Suvarna Soudha in Belgaum in a calendar year, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Kagodu Thimmappa said.
Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, Mr. Thimmappa said, as Speaker, his intention was to conduct sessions for 100 days in a year. If this was not possible, the government should conduct legislature sessions for at least 60 days in a year.
“Of this, a 40-day session should be held at the Vidhana Soudha and the remaining at the Suvarna Soudha,” he said.
The purpose of constructing Suvarna Soudha would be fulfilled only by holding two sessions a year. In addition, the massive structure (Suvarna Soudha) should be put to use throughout the year, he said.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had agreed to shift a few departments to the Suvarna Soudha and discussions were on about conducting joint sessions of the legislature in Belgaum.
It had also been decided to hold the meeting of standing committees of the legislature in the Suvarna Soudha and shifting the Divisional Commissioners’ office to the building, he added.
When asked about the poor attendance of legislators during the session, Mr. Thimmappa said elected representatives should develop a culture of attending the sessions regularly to have a larger understanding of the issues being discussed. “I hope they would understand my concern,” he observed.
